If you are looking for your child to sit either the SEAL or accelerated programs University High School and Buckley Park' are on the same day at the same time. University High School shares their results with Mount Alexander College, Footscray City and a number of other schools in the area. Buckley Park use a different High achieving test (ACER) and therefore is not able to use results from the schools using Edutest.

Neighborhood Policy

 

 

The principles of the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development neighbourhood school policy are found in the Education Act 2008.  These are:

 

  • To guarantee the right of each child to a place in the designated neighbourhood school.
  • Wherever practical, to provide parents/guardians with the opportunity to enrol their child at the same school as that being concurrently attended by an older brother or sister who resides permanently at the same address.
  • To allow parents not wishing to send their child to the neighbourhood school to select any other school in which space is available.
  • To contain enrolments in each school within the limits of available resources as determined by the Regional Director.
  • Attendance at a particular primary school does not automatically guarantee enrolment at a particular secondary school.

 

Placement Criteria

 

 

Where there are insufficient places at a school for all students who seek entry, students should be enrolled in the following priority order unless determined otherwise by the Regional Director.

 

  1. Students for whom the school is the designated neighbourhood school (determined by a straight line from the student’s home to front gate of the school).
  2. In those instances where the Regional Director has restricted the enrolment of a school, students for whom the school is the nearest one to their permanent residential address.
  3. Students with a brother or sister who will be concurrently attending the school and who resides permanently at the same address.
  4. Students seeking enrolment on specific curriculum grounds.
  5. Students in order of closeness of their home to the school.

 

Application Process

 

 

If you select a school other than the neighbourhood school as first preference, you should provide at least four (4) school preferences in Section 2 of the Application Enrolment form.

 

Note:  If students are not successful in gaining their preferences, they will be placed in their designated neighbourhood school.

 

 

 

Placement Appeals Process

 

  • Parents have the right to appeal a Year 7 placement decision.  In the first instance, the appeal should be to the Principal of the preferred school.  If a parent remains dissatisfied, a further avenue of appeal to the Regional Director may be made.

 

Curriculum Grounds

 

 

Some schools provide entry based on curriculum grounds, such as sport, music and language.

 

 

If your first preference school requires an additional completed Curriculum Criteria Form, this needs to be submitted with your initial application through the Primary School.

 

 

If your second, third or fourth preference schools require an additional completed Curriculum Criteria Form, you must send this directly to the relevant school with a covering letter confirming this documentation relates to a future preference.

 

Select Entry Accelerated Learning (SEAL) Programs

 

  • These programs cater for gifted/high potential students.
  • Years 7-10 usually completed in 3 years with increased options for VCE studies
  • Enquiries are made directly to schools
  • Entrance exams usually occur in May
  • Close schools offering the program include Brunswick Secondary, Buckley Park Secondary, Mount Alexander College and University High School.

 

Note – Various schools offer other programs to provide extension for motivated and academically advanced students.

Applying for non-government schools

 

  • If you are sure you have already secured a place for your child in a non-government school you still need to complete and return the application form but you don’t need to put in preferences.
  • If you have not had a place confirmed, is it is advisable to still put in preferences for government schools.
  • Please be aware of personal situations that may change and alter secured enrolments in non-government school.
